Level R-4的外观是不固定的，他会随着流浪者切入后室前最后所在的地方而变化。或是冷清的上班街道，或是一趟地铁，或是一次永别的航班。

本层级内发生的所有内容均与流浪者切入至后室前10分钟内发生的所有事情无任何差别，而其中，流浪者甚至可以看到过去的自己进行的每一段与别人的交互。本层级内的人类并无任何“实体”的特征。

本层级中，流浪者的自身通常表现为透明的，并且发出的任何声波都无法传播信息。这使得流浪者无法与本层级的任何人类接触，交谈。但是流浪者的双脚仍旧可以直接接触地面并与物体交互，但是这种“物体交互”的前提是流浪者不对物体进行位置，状态，以及形状上产生会被察觉的变化。

假若流浪者探索足够遥远以致于离开切出前经过的主要地点，会遇到一股“无形的墙”阻挡流浪者继续前进，并在下一次眨眼后将流浪者传送回那个并未切入后室的“自己”此时所在的位置。

流浪者切入时，自身会穿着与在切入后室前穿着的服装与手持的设备。但是年龄不会变化。服装的大小会自动适配如今流浪者的体型。

本层级存在一系列特殊效应。

“褪色效应”

褪色效应是只属于Level R-4的效应，这种效应类似前厅中纸张的褪色，但其速度会加快并在10分钟内完成对整个层级的“褪色”。其表现为

• 流浪者看到的画面呈棕黄色，部分区域以一种类似被擦除的方式变为虚空。同时，流浪者会产生约200度的近视，然而无论流浪者是否佩戴眼镜，近视均不会受到矫正。
• 流浪者对声音的反应将变得迟钝，据流浪者描述，任何东西的触感也都会变得“薄薄的”、“粗糙的”，就像在触摸一本已经发黄的书。
• 流浪者的听觉出现被扰乱的现象。类似于老式收音机的杂音。
• 在流浪者的“幻象”切入后室前30秒。任何物体的运动都会以一种超自然的方式突然终止，就如同被定格在了一瞬。这时，褪色现象通常已经蔓延的极度严重。

这种效应的程度随着时间而变化，通常在流浪者切入3分钟左右开始。

“记忆折射”

本层级幻象的玻璃中有时反射的光会闪过流浪者的记忆。这通常是及其普通的一个片段，例如自己小学的时候上课听讲等。随着在本层级的时间流逝，反射光的内容也逐渐从“幼年”，到“同年”，再到“青年”。这一情况会持续到流浪者切入层级后的9分30秒。

这些画面的内容仅真实的流浪者可见，然而模拟的流浪者无法看见任何异样。

假若流浪者对来到的地方有很深的印象，很可能在一瞬间的眨眼中看到几年前的该地点，但伴随着下一次眨眼，便会回到原有的地点。

“送别礼”

当褪色效应达到最后时间时，流浪者会发现周围的所有物体正在变得透明，只有自己本身与使自己切入后室的契机变得越来越清晰，例如一块马路上的石子，一小扇门，一张机票。

流浪者会发现自己来到了一个全暗的地方，仅有那个“契机”正在发光作为光源。地面被一层极浅的水覆盖。流浪者的走路中便会泛起涟漪。有细碎的尘土从天散下，被“契机”照得闪闪发亮。

这个“契机”会一直发光，周围也会一直在黑暗中度过。直到流浪者下定决心去触摸这个“契机”，并回到自己该去的地方
